Bidspirit auction | A Trio of Chinese Carved

A Trio of Chinese Carved Hardwood Architectural Inset Panels - A set comprising two vertical and one horizontal inset panels, crafted from a dense dark hardwood. The panels feature deeply undercut, high-relief carvings of traditional Chinese motifs. The two vertical panels are decorated with flowering branches; one depicts a peony branch, symbolizing wealth and honor, and the second depicts a gnarled plum blossom branch, symbolizing resilience. Each vertical panel incorporates two cartouches containing stylized variations of the Shou character, an auspicious symbol for longevity. One panel features octagonal cartouches, while the other features circular cartouches. The smaller horizontal panel is decorated with foliate and floral scrolls surrounding two scroll-edged cartouches containing incised Chinese cursive script (caoshu). The side edges of the panels are rough-hewn with visible notches and tenons at the top and bottom, identifying them as former components of a larger architectural or furniture structure such as a screen, partition, or bed. The reverse sides are fitted with wire mounting hardware for wall display. Vertical Panels: 33.5 in. (H) x 8.5 in. (W) Horizontal Panel: 9.25 in. (H) x 12.25 in. (W).
