Letter from The Bikur Cholim Hospital Signed by Rabbi Tzvi Pesach Frank, Rabbi Yosef Gershon Horowitz, Rabbi Eliyahu Re’em, 1924. - Letter from The Bikur Cholim Hospital Signed by the Rabbis of the Grand Court for all Ashkenazi Congregations, Rabbi Tzvi Pesach Frank, Rabbi Yosef Gershon Horowitz, Rabbi Eliyahu Re’em, Jerusalem 1924. Grand Court for Ashkenazi Congregations is the veteran court of Rabbi Shmuel Salant which was established in 1841 and for many years was situated in an office in the courtyard of the Churva synagogue. The Ga’on Rabbi Tzvi Pesach Frank was already appointed as rabbinical judge during lifetime of Rabbi Shmuel Salant, and was eventually appointed Av Beit Din. The Bikur Cholim Hospital was founded in the Old City of Jerusalem in ca. 1859 and was one of the most important institutes of the Perushim - the Ashkenazi settlement in the city. The hospital was established following the ban on the missionary hospitals in which Christians attempted to draw the Jews of Eretz Israel closer to the Christian faith. After the settlement and construction of neighborhoods outside the walls of the Old City, the need arose to enlarge the hospital and a decision was reached to build a new hospital on Nevi'im St. in the center of the new city.
