First edition of the fundamental sefer on the laws and customs of Torah reading authored by the one unique among the prominent poskim of recent generations, whose sefer Sha'arei Ephraim, along with his Mateh Ephraim, which deals with the halachahs of the high holidays, became fundamental seforim in their fields and have been published in many editions.
R' Ephraim Zalman Margulies of Brody (1761-1828) was known as one of the leading Gaonim of his generation as well as a prolific writer of many important Halachic works. He served for a while as the Rav of Uhaniv,
however he resigned the position and from then on declined to serve in the
Rabbinate although he was offered many prestigious positions including the
Chief Rabbinate of Frankfurt. He settled in Brody and taught a select group
of outstanding students. He was also well known as a wealthy man and is
often used as a classic example of Torah u’gedulah. His works include Bais
Ephraim, Tiv Gittin, Mateh Ephraim and others.
