Letter from R' Moshe Yitzchak Ha’Levy Segal, Father of the Manchester Rosh Yeshiva, Manchester, 1930. To Rabbi Moshe Mordechei Epstein . ”מאד מאד צערתי ותרגז רוחי לשמוע מכל הצרות הגדולות והשוד והשבר שעברו על ראש ידידי הדר”ג שליט”א..” R' Moshe Yitzchak Ha’Levy Segal (1881–1947) was an outstanding Talmid Chochom, who received Semicha from Rav Yechiel Michel Epstein (Oruch Ha’Shulchan). He served as Rosh Yeshiva in Yeshivas Eitz Chaim in London and in Manchester Yeshiva. In Manchester in addition to his duties in the Yeshiva he was instrumental in the development of the Orthodox community. Father of the renowned R. Yehuda Zev Segal who was his successor as Manchester Rosh Yeshiva. R' Moshe Mordechai Epstein (1866-1934), learned at the famed Volozhin Yeshiva, where he was considered an Ilui. He was asked by the “Alter” of Slabodka to serve as Rosh Yeshiva of the Knesses Yisroel-Slabodka Yeshiva. Additionally, he served as Av Beis Din of Slabodka and was active in the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah. He led a group of Talmidim from Slabodka to establish Yeshivas Chevron. Following the Chevron pogrom of 1929, in which many of the students at his Yeshiva were killed, the Yeshiva was moved to Yerusholayim.
