Ohel Yosef, First work of rabbinic responsa published in America by an American Rav (R. Yosef Eliyohu Fried). N.Y. 1903. The mass immigration of hundreds of thousands of Jews from Europe to the United States resulted in many new Halachic queries that arose because of the different religious, economic and social conditions. Includes interesting topics such as Birchas Cohanim by a Cohen whose lax in his religious observance, bread baked by Jews on Shabbos, travel by ferry on Shabbos, building a Sukkah on a fire escape and others. Included are responsa by R. Yitzchak Elchonon Spektor of Kovno (Chap 13, 23, 24) and a query from R. Simcha Zissel Ziv of Kelm (Alter of Kelm) (Chap 2). R. Yosef Eliyohu Fried (1841-1927) served as Rav of Shokian, Lithuania for 16 years before immigrating to the United States where he served as Rav of the Congregation Adas Yeshurun in New York (Eldridge St Shul).
