The mass immigration of hundreds of thousands of Jews from Europe to the United States resulted in many new Halachic queries particularly in the field of Gittin where it is imperative that all names and nicknames be spelled correctly. This is the earliest work on the orthography of American names in Gittin. R. Aaron Gordon (1845-1922), was born in Miadziol (a suburb of Vilna) and was known as the “Miadziol Ilui”. He received rabbinical ordination from R. Shlomo Ha’Cohen of Vilna and R. Moshe Danishevsky of Slabodka.
