In the late 19th century, with the renewal of a Jewish agricultural presence in Eretz Yisroel, a great Halachic debate erupted concerning the Shmitta Year. While some great Poskim were lenient and permitting selling of the land to Non-Jews for the duration of Shmitta, others were staunchly opposed. In 1888, an anonymous publication was printed in Berdichev under the pseudonym “Re’Mah” (since attributed to R. Meir Levin of Pinsk) in support of the Heter. In response this pamphlet was published by R. Chaim Hausdorf of Yerushalayim who strongly disputed the halachic validity of the sale. For an extensive history of the subject see Sam Finkel, Rebels in the Holy Land (Jerusalem 2012) Lilienthal press. With bookplate of R. S.Y. Weinberg Rosh Yeshiva of Ner Yisroel Baltimore.
