He writes in his introduction that the Hebrew text is based chiefly after Rabbi Wolf Heidenheim’s celebrated “Sapho Berurah.” The English translation is based upon “our modern German translators, my own studies and…David Levi. Although Leeser had virtually no rabbinic contemporaries in America with whom to confer, he nonetheless persevered in the task of preparing many important Hebrew texts for publication.
