THE OLD HERMIT AT THE SHRINE PAINTING AFTER INNESS - Turn of the century oil painting on canvas executed in the manner after George Inness' (Scottish/American, 1825 - 1894) celebrated landscape The Old Hermit at the Shrine, depicting a solitary monk kneeling before a small devotional shrine carved into a rocky forest hillside. The composition is illuminated by a warm, ethereal glow emanating from the shrine, creating the contemplative atmosphere for which Inness's spiritual landscapes are renowned. Housed in a carved wood frame stamped ”Made in Belgium - Hand Carved” to verso. MEASURES: 49.75 in x 39.75 in FRAME DIMENSIONS: 53 in x 43 in CONDITION REPORT: Overall good to fair estate pre-owned condition. Painting presents well beneath an aged varnish. Moderate surface wear and signs on inpainting present. No obvious tears or punctures visible. Canvas is stable and appears to have possibly been relined. Gilt frame exhibits minor handling wear while remaining suitable for display.
