French Gothic Revival Style Carved Oak Coffer or Blanket Chest - A large oak coffer or blanket chest executed in the French Gothic Revival style. The rectangular form is crafted from solid oak with a paneled, hinged lid that opens to a single undivided interior. The front facade features four main panels, each deeply carved with intricate blind Gothic tracery, trefoils, and floral motifs. The upper frieze is adorned with a horizontal row of relief-carved circular rosettes. The corner stiles are elaborately detailed with carved standing figures atop Solomonic, or twisted-column, supports. The side panels are decorated with classic linenfold carving. The piece utilizes joined construction and stands on integral block feet. Primary wood is oak; secondary woods used for the interior floor and back panels consist of oak and a softwood variety. The lid is attached with recessed metal hinges. No maker's marks, stamps, or labels are present. Height: 26 inches Width: 54 inches Depth: 20 inches.
