Signed. 24x15cm.  According to Gerald Coverly, the artist’s great-grandson, this painting was one of 76 catalogued paintings (together with additional works) offered in the March 1907 exhibition and sale of the ‘The Remaining Works of the Late James Charles’ conducted by Ernest, Brown & Phillips at the Leicester Galleries, London. A total of 88 works were sold, realizing a sum of £3,945.14s (circa £478,000 in current value). The auctioneer’s ledger indicates that this oil was purchased by William D. Hutchinson of Trefoyle, Cowper Road, Harpenden, for £10.10s (about £1,270 in today’s value).
