Lionel Standard Gauge Pre-War 408E Dual Motor Electric Locomotive in Mojave Finish - A Lionel Corporation Standard Gauge electric locomotive, model 408E, featuring a painted tinplate body in Mojave (tan/pea green) with red and black accents. The locomotive is constructed with a die-cast metal frame and dual Super-Motor electric units. It features brass and copper trim, including handrails, piping, and dual pantographs on the roof. The central cab section is adorned with two oval brass plates on each side with orange-red lettering: one reading LIONEL and the other 408E. The underside of the chassis is fitted with two motor blocks, each bearing a black and brass plate reading LIONEL SUPER-MOTOR FOR STANDARD TRACK THE LIONEL CORPORATION, N.Y. Several fragments of the cast wheels bear the raised text THE LIONEL CORP. The locomotive includes red and green marker lights and headlights at both ends. , The locomotive shows significant dust accumulation across all surfaces and minor paint chipping along the edges and raised details consistent with age (photos 1, 4, and 5). The die-cast wheels are suffering from advanced zinc pest, characterized by severe intergranular corrosion, expansion, and fragmentation (photos 6, 7, 8, and 9). One wheel is entirely detached from its axle (photos 1 and 6), and all remaining wheels show deep structural cracking, with some spokes and rims crumbling away. One light housing on the green-marker end appears to be missing its bulb or lens (photo 5). Due to the catastrophic failure of the wheels, the locomotive is not currently functional and requires complete wheel replacement. The body, trim, and motor blocks appear structurally intact.
