Petersdorff, Charles. A Practical and Elementary Abridgment of the Cases. Treadway, 1829-1831. - A multi-volume set of antique legal treatises titled A Practical and Elementary Abridgment of the Cases Argued and Determined in the Courts of King's Bench, Common Pleas, Exchequer, and at Nisi Prius. Authored by Charles Petersdorff, Esq., of the Inner Temple, this collection was published in New York by W. R. H. Treadway and Gould & Banks. The volumes feature title pages printed in black and red ink with publication dates of 1829, 1830, and 1831. The works are large format octavo volumes bound in full sheepskin or calf leather, characterized by spines featuring two distinct leather title labels: one in red reading PETERSDORFF'S ABRIDGMENT and one in black indicating the volume number in gold-toned Roman numerals. The text block is printed on cream-colored paper and includes alphabetical, chronological, and systematic arrangements of common law cases and rules of court dating back to 1660. The upper right corner of the front boards features a handwritten signature in black ink that appears to read E. J. Moore or similar. These are antique volumes and exhibit wear consistent with age and use. The leather bindings show significant desiccation and rot, with heavy scuffing and substantial loss to the leather at the heads and tails of the spines (Photo 1, Photo 21). Several spine labels are chipped or partially missing (Photo 11, Photo 16). Internally, the pages show widespread heavy foxing and oxidation (Photo 5, Photo 15). Moderate water staining is visible throughout the margins of the text blocks (Photo 9, Photo 22). Despite the external deterioration, the text remains complete and legible.
