Antique Fairbanks Standard Double Pan Balance Scale with Porcelain Pans - An antique Fairbanks double-pan balance scale constructed with a cast iron base and porcelain pans. The base is finished in black paint with gold-toned pinstriping and decorative floral motifs. The central pedestal of the base features the cast-in name FAIRBANKS. Supported by the cast iron frame are two white glazed ceramic pans, each secured by three metal clips. Centered on each pan is a black transfer-printed logo depicting a globe with a banner reading FAIRBANKS STANDARD. Smaller text on the globe includes NEW YORK, ATLANTIC OCEAN, and SOUTH PACIFIC OCEAN. A horizontal metal poise beam is mounted across the front, graduated from 0 to 5 and marked at the right with GRAM. The scale retains its original sliding poise weight and a vertical leveling indicator at the top of the central column. Each pan measures approximately 3 7/8 inches in diameter. The scale shows signs of age and use consistent with an antique tool. There is significant oxidation and surface rust on the metal clips holding the pans, the central pivot mechanism, the poise beam, and the vertical support rods (photos 4, 6, and 7). The cast iron base exhibits scattered loss and wear to the black paint and gold-toned decorative stenciling, particularly around the feet and edges (photos 3, 5, and 7). Fine surface crazing is visible in the glaze of both white porcelain pans (photos 1 and 2). The item is covered in a layer of surface dust and grime throughout.
