1736 Antique Needlework Alphabet Band Sampler - This antique vertical band sampler is executed in polychrome silk or wool threads on a linen ground. The textile is organized into several horizontal registers separated by decorative dividing bands of geometric and stylized floral motifs. The upper half features multiple rows of alphabets in varying styles, including block and cursive scripts, accompanied by rows of numerals. The central portion contains a stitched biblical verse from Proverbs 12:24 reading: The hand of the diligent shall bear rule but the slothful shall be under tribute. The bottom register is decorated with a stylized vine border featuring acorn or bud motifs. Below the central verse is a section of faint, partially illegible text that appears to include the maker's name. The sampler is presented behind glass in a dark-stained wood frame. On the reverse is a blue and white printed adhesive label for a Bristol, England business reading: WALTER WEAVER, WHOLESALE & RETAIL, PICTURE & SHOWCARD FRAME MAKER, REGILDER & PICTURE RESTORER, ETC., 45, Colston Street, BRISTOL. A handwritten portion of this label includes the text: No 2059 Date. 22/9/36. A modern replacement hanging wire is attached to two metal rings on the back. Height: 21 1/4 inches Width: 7 3/4 inches. The sampler exhibits significant age-related toning and browning to the linen ground, visible across the entire surface (photo 1). There is notable fading to the colored embroidery threads, particularly affecting the legibility of the text in the lower half (photo 4). Small scattered holes and areas of thread loss consistent with age are present in the linen ground (photo 2). The wooden frame shows scuffing, finish loss, and small chips along the edges and corners (photo 6, 7). The paper backing on the reverse is intact but shows significant toning and discoloration (photo 8).
