Bidspirit auction | Roycroft Hammered Copper Owl Bookend
Roycroft Hammered Copper Owl Bookend - A single Arts and Crafts movement bookend featuring a hand-hammered texture and a decorative owl motif. The piece is constructed from copper with a silver-toned wash or pewter finish. The upright section has a curved top with a central notch and is decorated with a rectangular repoussé plaque in the center depicting the stylized face of an owl. Small wire-work scrolls are applied to the lower corners of the upright. The base flange is a rectangular plate of copper, originally joined to the upright with four copper rivets. On the top surface of the base flange, there is an impressed mark consisting of a circle containing a single letter R, surmounted by a stylized cross with two horizontal bars. This is the orb and cross mark used by the Roycroft Arts and Crafts community. The underside of the base is covered with a green felt lining. The bookend is currently in two separate pieces, as the upright portion has become detached from the base flange (photo 3). The detachment reveals the four original rivet holes and significant dark oxidation and patina where the two components were formerly joined (photo 3). The silver-toned finish shows heavy wear throughout, particularly on the raised hammer marks and along the edges, revealing the underlying reddish copper (photo 1). There are scattered scratches and small surface dents consistent with age and use. The felt lining on the underside is intact but shows light wear.
