Bidspirit auction | Studio Craft Sculptural Walnut and
Studio Craft Sculptural Walnut and Ash Rocking Armchair Sam Maloof Style - A sculptural rocking armchair crafted from solid wood, following the organic design principles of the late 20th-century American studio furniture movement. The chair is constructed primarily of walnut, featuring a rich, natural dark grain throughout the seat, frame, and backrest. The backrest is composed of seven tapered spindles set between a curved lower rail and a shaped crest rail characterized by two prominent vertical protrusions. The seat is deeply saddled and contoured for ergonomic support. The joinery is highly stylized, featuring hand-sculpted transitions where the armrests meet the front legs and where the legs integrate into the seat. The rockers are composed of a lighter-toned wood, likely ash or oak, and are laminated for structural strength. The front and rear legs are secured to the rockers with visible round wood plugs. No maker marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the chair. The chair is in good structural condition. There is visible wear to the underside of both rockers, including surface scuffs, scratches, and loss of finish consistent with floor contact (photo 4). Minor surface scratches and light handling marks are present on the seat and the rounded tops of the armrests (photo 1). The joinery remains tight and the wood surfaces retain a consistent semi-gloss finish.
