Contemporary Handcrafted Hardwood Specimen Cabinet with Birdseye Maple Panels - A contemporary handcrafted specimen cabinet or document chest constructed with a dark, open-grained exotic hardwood case and highly figured birdseye maple panels. The rectangular case features through-dovetail joinery at all four corners. The single door is constructed with a solid hardwood frame housing a book-matched birdseye maple panel, mounted on brass knife hinges and secured with a top-mounted ball catch. A simple, dark-stained rectangular wooden pull is located on the right side of the door frame. The interior is fitted with three vertical birdseye maple dividers creating four storage compartments. The floor of the cabinet is pre-drilled with a series of small, regularly spaced holes, indicating the dividers are adjustable or the interior was intended for specific organizational inserts. The back of the cabinet consists of two birdseye maple panels separated by a central horizontal hardwood brace, secured with brass screws. There are no visible maker marks, signatures, or labels on the exterior or interior of the piece. Width: 12.5 inches Height: 22 inches Depth: 10 inches. The cabinet exhibits visible glue residue and squeeze-out at several dovetail joints (photo 4). There are scuffs and minor finish losses along the edges and corners of the dark hardwood frame. A notable scratch is visible on the right-side exterior panel (photo 5). Small white spatters, possibly paint or plaster, are present on the lower corners of the back birdseye maple panels (photo 3). A vertical drying crack is located in the center birdseye maple divider (photo 7). The interior shows minor surface wear and light scratches consistent with use.
