Asa Munger and Munger and Benedict Eight-Day Brass Looking-Glass Clock - This antique American wall clock is a looking-glass model featuring a weight-driven mechanism. The wooden case is constructed with figured veneers and features a flat, stepped cornice above a central glazed section and a large mirrored panel in the lower portion. The case is flanked by hand-carved pilasters decorated with foliate and spiral motifs. The circular, off-white painted dial features black Roman numeral hour markers and a secondary dial positioned below the twelve o'clock mark with numerals 15 and 30. The movement is an eight-day brass mechanism mounted on a wooden seat board, designed to strike on a top-mounted bell. The interior backboard is lined with decorative yellow and blue patterned wallpaper. Centered on this wallpaper is a printed paper label within a decorative border featuring an illustration of a horse-drawn chariot. The label reads A. MUNGER'S Patent Eight-day Brass Clocks MADE, WARRANTED & SOLD WHOLESALE & RETAIL BY MUNGER & BENEDICT AUBURN N.Y. Additional text at the bottom of the label provides instructions for regulating the pendulum. The clock is accompanied by two heavy, cylindrical cast-iron weights and two brass pulleys with hooks. Height: 38 inches. This antique clock is presented in as-found condition. The painted dial shows significant paint loss, staining, and oxidation, and is missing both hands (photo 4). The lower mirrored glass exhibits heavy foxing and silvering loss throughout (photo 1). The wooden case shows scattered losses to the veneer, along with scratches and scuffs consistent with its age (photo 6). The interior wallpaper is heavily stained and peeling, particularly at the bottom (photo 2). Several extra holes are visible in the wooden backboard (photo 2). The mechanism is currently disassembled and its functional completeness is unknown (photo 2). The pendulum is not present.
