Folk Art Antique Carved Wood Relief Portrait Jewelry Box with Lion Paw Feet - An intricately carved wooden jewelry box featuring high-relief decorations on all visible exterior surfaces. The hinged lid displays a dual portrait consisting of a profile of a man with a pipe and a woman wearing a mortarboard graduation cap. The box is constructed with bombe-style sides. The front panel is decorated with two winged griffins flanking a central lattice-patterned shield. The rear panel depicts a stylized female face at the center surrounded by scrolling foliage and two birds. The piece is supported by four large carved lion-paw feet. The interior is lined with a green patterned damask textile. The box is assembled with two metal hinges on the interior. No maker's marks, signatures, or labels are visible on the exterior or the underside. Height: 7 inches Length: 10 inches. This antique piece shows signs of age and use throughout. The exterior wood exhibits wear to the finish, particularly on the raised portions of the carvings. There are small chips and losses to the carved details, notably on the birds and foliage on the back panel (photo 5, photo 7). The interior green lining shows significant wear, including staining, fraying, and overall fading of the pattern (photo 9, photo 10). The underside shows surface scratches and staining consistent with its age (photo 11).
