The artwork is rendered in a flat, illustrative style against an ochre background, utilizing a palette of black, teal, red, and gold. The locomotive is shown in a profile view, featuring an oval brass-colored plate on the side tank reading 1008. The work is titled by a handwritten cursive inscription at the top: Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway No. 1008. The lower portion of the panel contains detailed technical specifications in the same hand: Radial wheels 3 ft 7 3/4 in, Driving wheels 5 ft 8 in, Diameter of cylinders (2) 18 in, Stroke 26 in, Weight in working order 55 tons 19 cwt, Tubes 220 x 1 3/4, Total heating surface 1216.4 sq ft, Water capacity 1340 gallons, and Coal 2 tons. The painting is housed in a wide, tiered wooden frame with a gilded inner liner and a dark-stained wood panel verso. Width: 27 1/2 in. Height: 18 1/2 in. This antique work shows signs of age consistent with its period. There is visible paint loss and flaking, primarily located along the bottom right edge of the locomotive body and affecting the lower right portion of the handwritten inscriptions (photo 1, 4). The painted surface exhibits overall crazing and fine hairline cracking throughout the background and locomotive body (photo 2, 3). A small circular indentation or loss is visible on the lower right ochre field (photo 1). The wooden frame shows significant wear, including chipping to the outer edges and loss to the interior gilding and finish (photo 1, 7, 8).
