A Pair of Mars Signal Light Co. Model 888 Oscillating Emergency Fire Vehicle Lights with Mounting Flange - A pair of antique 12-volt oscillating emergency vehicle signal lights and a single mounting flange, constructed from chrome-plated and black-painted metal with glass lenses. Historically used on fire apparatus, ambulances, and police vehicles, these units are designed to produce a distinctive figure-eight warning beam. Each light features a cylindrical housing tapering to a rounded rear and a front bezel secured by a tension band. The glass outer lenses are clear and convex, housing internal red reflectors. An oval red and silver adhesive label is present on each light housing and the mounting ring. The label on one light bears the printed text THE LIGHT FROM MARS MODEL 888 and is stamped with VOLTS 12 and SERIAL NO. 11509. It also carries the text U.S. PATENT NO. 3,546,669 and MARS SIGNAL LIGHT CO. NAPLES, FLORIDA 33942. The second light bears an identical label with SERIAL NO. 11503. The separate circular mounting flange features a matching label with SERIAL NO. 11507. The housings feature ventilation holes and internal electrical components are visible through the lenses. This pair of antique signal lights and mounting flange are in used, unrestored condition. The chrome-plated surfaces exhibit widespread pitting, surface oxidation, and scratching consistent with age and exterior vehicle mounting (photo 3). The black-painted sections show areas of paint loss, surface rust, and abrasions (photo 10). The mounting flange shows heavy surface oxidation and rust across the entirety of its chrome finish (photo 7). The glass lenses appear intact but show surface grime and minor abrasions (photo 5). Electrical wiring is not present externally and the mechanical oscillating functions are untested.
