Bidspirit auction | Antique Hanging Industrial Kerosene Ship
Antique Hanging Industrial Kerosene Ship Or Railroad Caboose Lantern - This antique hanging lantern is an industrial-style kerosene or oil lamp designed for suspension. The piece is constructed with a brass lower fuel reservoir and two curved support arms that lead to a large circular metal reflector shade. The shade features a green-painted exterior with a perforated ventilation rim and a white enameled underside to direct light downward. The upper housing consists of a multi-tiered green-painted chimney assembly topped with a heavy iron hanging loop. The burner assembly remains in its original non-electrified configuration, featuring a wick adjuster knob and a small toggle chain. A circular incised mark is present on the underside of the brass base, though the characters within the circle are worn and not legible as a specific name. A small rectangular stamp is also visible on the side of the burner assembly, which is likewise blurred and not legible. Height: 15 inches to the top of the hanging loop. The lantern displays a weathered, authentic patina consistent with its antique age. The green-painted metal housing and iron hanging loop show significant surface oxidation and areas of paint loss (photo 1). The brass base and support arms exhibit heavy tarnish and multiple surface scratches. Notable dents are visible on the bottom edge and the side of the fuel reservoir (photo 5). The white enameled interior of the shade remains largely intact with some surface accumulation and minor wear to the outer edge (photo 4). The internal glass chimney is missing. The hinge for the upper chimney housing shows heavy rust but remains in place (photo 3).
