Antique American School Oil on Canvas Landscape with Barn and Chickens - An antique landscape painting executed in oil on canvas, depicting a rural farmstead under a dark, heavy sky. The composition features a central two-story weathered wooden barn with a tall, narrow entrance and smaller apertures. To the left, several chickens are rendered with small, impasto-like dabs of white, brown, and yellow paint. To the right, a horse-drawn carriage or wagon is visible near a rising embankment, with further figures and livestock suggested in the mid-ground. The background consists of dense, dark foliage and a steeply rising hillside, characteristic of the American School or primitive folk art style. The color palette is dominated by deep greens, browns, and ochers. The work is unsigned and lacks any visible artist inscriptions on the front or verso. The canvas is secured to a four-member wooden stretcher with a central vertical crossbar and is housed in a period-style gilt wood frame with a cove and bead molding profile. The back of the canvas shows significant darkening and oxidation consistent with age. Based on the provided ruler, the framed width is approximately 11.25 inches and the framed height is approximately 15.5 inches. 15.5 x 11.25 inches. The antique painting displays significant condition issues. A prominent vertical tear or puncture approximately 4 inches in length is located in the center-right of the composition (photo 1, 4). There is a smaller puncture and area of canvas deformation on the left side (photo 1). Widespread paint loss and flaking are evident, particularly among the chickens in the foreground (photo 2, 8) and along the lower edge of the canvas (photo 1). The paint surface shows heavy craquelure throughout and is obscured by a thick layer of surface grime and yellowed varnish. The gilt frame has multiple chips and losses to the gilding, notably at the corners and along the edges (photo 5, 7, 8). 150 - 300
