19th Century Folk Art Oil Portrait of a Barefoot Boy on Wood Panel - A 19th-century folk art oil painting on a natural wood panel depicting a barefoot young boy. The subject is portrayed standing in a rustic landscape beside a terracotta water jar that is being filled by a wooden spout. He is dressed in dark trousers, a red-and-black patterned waistcoat, and a dark jacket. The work is executed in a naive style with deliberate brushwork. The lower left corner contains dark pigment marks that appear to be a signature (photo 2), but the characters are not legible as a specific name. The verso of the wood panel shows faint, illegible script in white chalk or pencil (photo 3). The painting is housed in a substantial, multi-tiered gilt wood and composition cove frame featuring a repeating linear pattern. The back of the frame is fitted with a hanging wire and four metal tabs. These items are antique and show characteristics consistent with their age. Based on the visible wooden ruler, the exterior frame dimensions are approximately 11.5 inches in height and 10 inches in width. 11.5 x 10 inches (framed). The painting and frame are antique and exhibit corresponding signs of age. The oil painting shows surface dirt, a yellowed varnish layer, and scattered fine craquelure across the pictorial surface (photo 1). The gilt composition frame has condition issues, including multiple large areas of missing gesso and gilding, particularly at the corners and edges (photos 1, 4, and 5). There is visible structural separation at the mitered joints of the frame (photos 4 and 5). The verso shows significant loss to the original backing paper and oxidation to the wood panel and frame members (photo 3).
