Bidspirit auction | Two Mamod English Live Steam
Two Mamod English Live Steam Engine Models and a Line Shaft Accessory - This English lot includes two stationary live steam engine plants and a complementary line shaft transmission accessory. The larger steam plant is constructed with a red-painted pressed tinplate base and a black-painted pressed tinplate furnace box. It features a horizontal brass boiler with brass end caps, a green-painted cast metal engine frame, and a red-centered cast flywheel. The engine is equipped with a single-acting oscillating cylinder, a whistle, and a weighted safety valve. A red and gold adhesive decal is located on the furnace box, featuring a cartouche shape with the word Mamod and the text MADE IN ENGLAND below it. The second, smaller steam plant follows a similar construction with a red tinplate base, black furnace box, and horizontal brass boiler. It features a red-centered cast flywheel and a single-acting oscillating cylinder. A significantly worn red and gold adhesive decal is present on its furnace box, with the legible characters Mamod and MADE IN ENGLAND. The lot is completed by a model workshop line shaft accessory consisting of a rectangular wood base supporting three cast metal A-frame brackets. These brackets hold a steel shaft equipped with multiple pulleys and cotton string belts. The larger red base measures approximately 8 1/8 inches wide by 7 inches deep. The smaller red base measures approximately 4 1/2 inches long. The collection shows signs of significant age and use throughout. The larger steam engine exhibits heavy heat-related tarnishing and patina across the brass boiler (photo 1). There are multiple areas of paint loss and surface oxidation on the red base, particularly at the corners and along the edges (photo 8). The spirit burner tray is missing. The smaller engine shows extensive wear, including heavy brass tarnish, significant paint loss, and surface corrosion on the red base (photo 6). The chimney appears to have been resoldered at the base (photo 7), and the Mamod decal is largely missing (photo 2). The transmission accessory shows oxidation and pitting on the metal supports and staining on the wood base (photo 5). Mechanisms have not been tested under steam.
