Bidspirit auction | 1834 American Jacquard Woven Two-Color
1834 American Jacquard Woven Two-Color Coverlet - A 19th-century American Jacquard-woven coverlet constructed of wool and cotton in two joined panels with a central vertical seam. The textile features a repeating pattern of stylized floral rosettes and foliate sprays arranged in horizontal bands. The color palette consists of alternating rows of madder red and indigo blue supplementary weft on a natural cream-colored cotton ground. The lower border is decorated with a repeating motif of stylized Tree of Life designs interspersed with architectural house motifs. A woven date is integrated into the design at the lower left and right corners within a rectangular border, with the numerals reading 1834 (photo 2 and 6). The weave structure displays the characteristic reversible nature of a Jacquard textile. Length: Approximately 84 inches Width: Approximately 71.5 inches. The coverlet is in fair condition with significant signs of age and use. There are numerous scattered brown discolorations and stains throughout the cream-colored sections, visible in the overall views (photo 1 and 4). The bottom edge shows significant fraying and loss to the original fringe (photo 5 and 6). There is general thinning of the weave and localized areas of wear to the wool weft, particularly along the edges and near the central seam (photo 3). The center seam is intact but exhibits some puckering and slight misalignment of the pattern.
