Circa 1810 Painted Iron Longcase Clock Dial and Walker and Hughes Falseplate - A Regency period painted iron longcase clock dial and falseplate assembly. The arched dial features a hand painted pastoral scene in the lunette depicting three men and two women resting in a harvest field among hay stooks, with a cottage in the background. The main white dial displays black Roman numeral hour markers and Arabic numeral outer minute markers. It is equipped with a subsidiary seconds dial and a semi circular date aperture. The spandrels are decorated with gilt textured backgrounds featuring floral motifs and circular vignettes of wheat sheaves. The lower center of the dial is signed in black script Jn.o Hanall and Son, Worcester. The reverse of the iron dial is fitted with a cast falseplate. A brass gear on the back is stamped with the maker name WALKER and HUGHES. The rear of the black painted iron plate is also impressed with the letters W and H and the number 11. This assembly is offered as a dial and falseplate only; the movement, hands, weights, pendulum, and case are not present. The dial measures approximately 13 inches wide and 18 inches high. The dial surface exhibits extensive and heavy crazing and spider web cracking across the entire painted area (photo 1). There are visible areas of paint loss, most notably around the three winding holes and the date aperture (photo 5). A large horizontal scratch or crack is visible across the lower right spandrel (photo 4). The rear iron plate and the falseplate assembly show significant oxidation and surface rust throughout (photo 8). The mechanical components visible on the reverse, including the date wheel and center arbor, are heavily oxidized and appear seized (photo 9). The clock hands are missing.
