18th to 19th Century Ottoman Style Hand Stitched Leather and Filigree Metal Powder Flask - A powder flask featuring a body of dark brown hardened leather with hand-stitched construction. The front of the flask is decorated with applied metal plaques in a combination of square and triangular shapes. These plaques feature openwork ajoure designs in scrolling foliate and geometric patterns, secured to the leather body with dome-headed metal rivets. The vessel is fitted with a tapered metal nozzle showing a dark oxidation. The reverse side is equipped with a forged iron belt hook secured by two metal tabs. The leather is formed into a bulbous shape to hold black powder, consistent with 18th and 19th century Balkan or Ottoman manufacturing techniques. No maker names, hallmarks, or inscriptions are visible on the metalwork or leather components. An unidentifiable iron mount is located on the reverse. Width: 4.5 inches across the widest point of the body Length: 6.8 inches from the base to the tip of the nozzle. The leather body exhibits significant aging with drying and cracking, particularly visible at the stitched perimeter and near the nozzle junction (photos 1 and 4). The leather shows surface wear and loss of the original finish throughout (photo 3). The decorative metal plaques show a heavy dark patina and oxidation, with several rivets missing or loose (photo 2). The iron belt hook on the reverse is heavily rusted with surface pitting (photo 4). The metal nozzle is heavily oxidized with green verdigris and calcified buildup at the joint where it meets the leather (photo 2). The item is in fair, uncleaned condition.
