Circa 1850 Antique Japanned Tole Document Box - An antique japanned tin storage box, commonly referred to as a tole document box. The container is constructed from sheet metal with visible soldered seams and features a domed lid. The exterior is finished with a black ground decorated with hand-painted foliate and geometric motifs. The front panel is embellished with a red scalloped border containing textured, impasto-style paint and stylized leaves in gold. The side panels feature a gold-painted crisscross pattern with leaf accents at the intersections. A single wire bale handle is attached to the center of the lid. The box is secured by a metal hasp on the front. The interior is unpainted, showing the oxidized metal surface and visible solder reinforcement at the hinge points. No maker marks, signatures, or labels are present on any surface. Measurements: approximately 8 1/2 inches in length and 5 inches in height. The box shows significant wear consistent with age and utility. There is extensive paint loss, surface scratches, and oxidation across all exterior surfaces, particularly notable on the lid and back panel (photos 4 and 5). A prominent split or tear in the metal is visible at the rear left corner of the lid (photo 12). The interior displays heavy oxidation and surface rust, specifically in the rear left corner (photo 6). The painted decorations show fine crazing and some flaking, especially within the red impasto sections on the front (photo 7). The metal body shows minor denting and deformation, and the lid does not sit perfectly flush with the base (photo 2).
