Continental Hand Painted Faience Decorative Stove Tile or Warmer Base - A Continental earthenware decorative object, possibly a stove tile or warmer base, constructed with a square flat top plate overhanging a hollow rectangular pedestal. The piece is made from a cream-colored, coarse-grained ceramic body. The top surface is decorated en camaieu with a hand-painted scene in blue, grey, and black tones. The central motif depicts a classical gadrooned urn containing a bouquet of grapes and leaves, flanked by laurel branches. Below the urn is a rectangular cartouche containing a two-line German inscription in Fraktur script which reads: Wohl dem der sanft und redlich ist. Demselben hilft Gewalt und List. On one side of the pedestal base, a hand-painted mark consists of two intersecting diagonal lines crossing two other diagonal lines to form a lattice-like device; this mark is not legible as a specific name. The unglazed interior of the base shows the natural color and texture of the fired earthenware body. The top plate measures approximately 8 7/8 inches square. The total height is approximately 3 inches. The item shows significant age-related wear and use. There are numerous small chips and losses to the tin glaze along all four edges and corners of the top plate (photos 1, 2, and 3). A fine network of age crazing is visible across the entire glazed surface (photo 4). The unglazed pedestal base displays heavy surface staining, accumulated grime, and abrasions consistent with prolonged contact with a surface or heat source (photo 8). There is a small circular indentation or firing hole on one side of the base (photo 5). No large structural cracks or professional repairs are visible.
