Bidspirit auction | A Pair of Large Glazed

A Pair of Large Glazed Earthenware Seated Spaniel Mantle Ornaments - A pair of cream-colored glazed earthenware spaniel dog figurines. These seated figures are modeled in an upright posture with front paws held together and tails wrapped around the body. The figurines are executed in a press-molded flat-back style, designed for display on a mantle or shelf. The cream-white glaze is characterized by an intentional all-over craquelure finish. Facial details are hand-painted, featuring large orange-red snouts with black stippled whisker spots, black-painted noses, and mouths. The eyes are yellow with black pupils and arched black brows. Molded collars with textured detailing are visible around the necks. The bases are hollow and open, each with a single circular vent hole at the center. No maker marks, signatures, or country of origin stamps are present on the undersides or bodies of either figurine. Height: 11.5 inches. Both figurines exhibit extensive crazing throughout the glaze, which is a feature of the firing and aging process for this type of ceramic (photo 2). There is significant wear and loss to the orange-red paint on the snouts of both dogs, exposing the white glaze beneath (photos 2 and 5). Scattered pinholes and small firing vents in the glaze from the manufacturing process are visible across the bodies (photo 1). The undersides show surface dirt and darkened discoloration around the unglazed foot rims (photos 3 and 4). No chips, cracks, or professional repairs are visible.
