Primitive Antique J. Preston Industrial Wooden Hand Stamp Lowell Mass. - An antique industrial hand stamp featuring a turned hardwood body and a metal stamping die. The oval wooden block is constructed with integrated finger grooves on the long sides to facilitate a secure grip during use. The stamping face consists of raised metal characters and a thin metal border strip embedded into the end grain of the wood, which retains heavy blue ink staining. The metal characters are set in reverse for printing; they appear to read N I, d (with a macron or a), y b a from right to left. When printed, the text would read as ab y a d I N. The top of the wooden block features an impressed mark in four lines: J. PRESTON, / MAKER. / LOWELL, MASS. / 45. The block has a curved, ergonomic top surface and shows a natural aged patina on the wood. Width: Approximately 2.25 inches at the widest point (photo 5). Height: Approximately 0.75 inches (photo 6). The stamp is in good antique condition, showing signs of heavy industrial use. The stamping face and lower edges of the wood have significant blue ink staining (photo 1). The wooden body exhibits wear including scratches, abrasions, and a small age-related crack on one side (photo 2). The metal border strip is slightly bent and partially separated from the wood in the upper-right section of the die face (photo 5). The impressed maker's mark on the top is worn and faint but remains legible (photo 3).
