Bidspirit auction | A Pair of Antique Mexican
A Pair of Antique Mexican Abalone Inlay Silver Drop Earrings - A matched pair of antique Mexican drop earrings crafted from silver-toned metal with iridescent shell inlays. Each earring features a curvilinear, openwork frame housing two marquise-shaped sections of inlaid abalone shell, also known as paua shell. The shell displays a natural play of color including greens, pinks, and blues. The earrings are suspended from silver-toned French hook ear wires with coil and ball detailing. On the reverse, one earring bears an impressed mark in two rows reading ACA ICO. The corresponding earring is stamped on the reverse with a mark reading MEXICO, with partially legible characters above that appear to be ME. These marks indicate the pieces were produced in Acapulco, Mexico. Total length: 2 1/4 inches Drop length: 1 1/2 inches Weight: 4.268 g. The earrings are in good antique condition. There is visible surface oxidation and tarnish across the metal components, particularly concentrated on the reverse surfaces (photo 3) and within the recessed areas of the settings. The abalone shell inlays are intact and secure with no visible cracks or losses. The ear wires remain functional though show slight irregularities in shape consistent with use (photo 1).
