Antique 14K Gold Bezel Hand Carved Shell Cameo Brooch - This antique brooch features a hand-carved shell cameo set within a 14 karat gold bezel mounting. The cameo depicts a right-facing classical profile of a female figure, possibly a mythological goddess, with elaborate feathered or winged headwear, a strand of pearls around her neck, and draped neoclassical robes. The shell displays a white carved foreground against a pale pink nacreous background. The mounting is constructed from a yellow metal and includes a horizontal pin on the reverse with a tube hinge and a C-clasp mechanism. The pin has been replaced. The reverse side of the shell shows natural growth lines and some minor discoloration characteristic of organic marine shell. There are no visible maker's marks, hallmarks, or signatures on the frame or cameo. Length: 1 5/8 inches. The brooch is in good antique condition. The carved shell surface shows minor accumulated dust in the recessed details (photo 1). The reverse of the shell displays natural brownish spotting inherent to the material (photo 5). The metal frame shows surface scratches, age-related tarnish, and wear to the finish around the edges and on the pin mechanism (photo 3, photo 4). The pin has been replaced (photo 5). The shell carving remains crisp with no visible chips or cracks.
