Lionel Lines 1688E Streamlined Steam Locomotive and Tender with Motor Unit - A vintage O gauge electric toy steam locomotive, tender, and motor assembly. The locomotive is a die-cast metal torpedo-style streamlined body. The sides of the locomotive feature applied rectangular silver-tone metal plates printed with 1688E LIONEL LINES 1688E in black. The locomotive shell includes two red marker jewels at the front and a pilot truck with two metal wheels mounted on a black frame. The tender is constructed of sheet metal with visible rivet detailing and applied metal plates on both sides printed with LIONEL LINES. The tender is mounted on two four-wheel trucks. The detached motor unit consists of a black-finished metal frame housing a copper-wound field coil and a three-position E-unit reverse mechanism with a protruding metal lever. A small screw-base light bulb is attached to the front of the motor frame. The wiring between the motor and the internal reverse unit is insulated in cloth. , The lot is disassembled with the motor unit detached from the locomotive shell (photo 1). The die-cast locomotive shell shows significant surface oxidation, paint loss, and pitting consistent with metal fatigue, particularly along the lower edges and boiler top (photos 2, 3, and 5). The tender exhibits surface rust, minor scratches, and localized paint loss on the body and wheels (photos 8, 10, and 11). The rear of the locomotive shell is open and shows interior dust and cobwebs (photo 4). The pilot truck is present but appears loosely attached (photo 6). The motor unit shows aged and fraying cloth-covered wiring; the functional state of the electrical components and motor is untested (photo 1). Mounting hardware and assembly screws are missing.
