Lionel Corporation Type Z 250 Watt Trainmaster Transformer - A high-capacity model train transformer constructed with a black molded bakelite housing and a metal faceplate. This Type Z Trainmaster model was designed for multi-control operation of O-gauge layouts. The faceplate features four control knobs: two large circular dials at the bottom for speed control and two smaller teardrop-shaped knobs at the top. The center of the faceplate is printed in black and red, featuring a central vertical stripe motif and the following text: TYPE Z, 250 WATT, 115 VOLTS 60 CYCLES, TRAINMASTER TRANSFORMER in red script, THE LIONEL CORPORATION, NEW YORK, MADE IN U. S. OF AMERICA. The dials include printed voltage scales ranging from 6 to 25 and speed indicators marked in miles per hour. The unit includes a red power indicator lens and an amber pilot light. The reverse side features eight metal binding post terminals arranged in two rows; the top row is stamped with four U characters, and the bottom row is stamped with the characters A, B, C, and D. A black two-prong power cord is attached through the rear of the housing. , The bakelite housing is intact with surface dust and minor scuffs consistent with age, particularly visible on the top and sides (photo 1). The metal faceplate shows significant yellowing of the original finish and scattered oxidation, most notably surrounding the central logo and text (photo 1). The red indicator light shows minor paint loss on its surface (photo 1). The printing on the faceplate remains legible despite the oxidation. The eight terminal posts on the rear appear complete and free of significant corrosion (photo 2). The power cord is intact without visible fraying, though the internal electrical components have not been tested for functionality.
