Ansonia Clock Co. Figural Cast Metal Mantel Clock with Open Escapement - An antique American mantel clock featuring a separate figural side piece, manufactured by the Ansonia Clock Co. The assembly consists of a central clock case and a large rectangular base, both constructed of cast metal with a black finish and incised scrolling foliate patterns. A separate hollow-cast metal figure of a seated woman holding a lyre accompanies the clock; the figure is finished in a dark patinated tone. The circular white dial features black Roman numeral hour markers and an exposed Brocot-style open escapement at the center. The ornate hands are finished in a gilt-brass tone. The mechanical eight-day, spring-driven movement provides time and strike functions, with a wire gong visible at the bottom of the case interior. The dial is printed at the lower edge with the text Manufactured by The Ansonia Clock Co. New York United States of America. A small trademark consisting of an A inside a diamond is printed at the center of the dial below the hands. The rear brass movement plate is stamped with the manufacturer name ANSONIA CLOCK Co. along with the following text: PATENTED JUNE 14.81, NEW YORK U.S.A., and PATENTED JUNE 18.1882. The movement plate also bears a stamped A in a diamond logo and the numerals 6 1/2. Length: 17 inches across the base Height: 14.5 inches to the top of the clock finial. The clock and figure exhibit a significant accumulation of dust and surface debris across all areas (photo 1). The black finish on the metal case and base shows scattered scuffing, minor paint loss, and areas of white oxidation spotting, particularly visible on the upper surfaces of the base (photo 6). The seated figure is currently detached from the base (photo 6). The rear brass dust cover is secured with a strip of modern silver-toned adhesive tape (photo 10). Visible surface tarnish and oxidation are present on the internal brass movement plates and gears (photo 9). A small screw is missing from the upper left portion of the rear movement plate (photo 12). The pendulum and winding key are not present. The movement is untested.
