Elgin Sportsman Stainless Steel Seventeen Jewel Manual Wind Wristwatch - This French-cased Elgin Sportsman manual wind wristwatch features a stainless steel construction and a cream-colored dial. The dial is marked ELGIN in black lettering, SPORTSMAN in red, and 17 JEWELS above the 6 o'clock position. The bottom of the dial is marked FRANCE. The watch face is composed of applied Arabic numerals at the even hours and stick indices at the odd hours, with a printed outer minute track featuring luminous dots. The screw-down case back is exteriorly stamped ELGIN WATERPROOF RESISTANT TO SHOCK - DUST AND MAGNETISM STAINLESS STEEL. The interior of the case back is marked ELGIN NATIONAL WATCH COMPANY FRANCE 5935S. The mechanical movement is an Elgin caliber 720, which is engraved SEVENTEEN 17 JEWELS, ELGIN 720, UNADJUSTED, and FRANCE. The watch is fitted with a vintage stainless steel expansion band, the interior of which is marked SPEIDEL PAT. 2,689,450 and STAINLESS STEEL BOTTOM CAPS 69. Per user-provided facts, the watch runs. The stainless steel case and lugs show significant scratching and surface wear throughout (photo 1, 6). The dial exhibits heavy spotting, oxidation, and ”tropical” patination across the entire surface (photo 2). The acrylic crystal has a prominent vertical crack running from the center toward the 12 o'clock position and numerous fine surface scratches (photo 2). The crown shows significant wear to the knurling (photo 5). The movement appears intact but shows signs of light oxidation and residue near the gasket seat (photo 8). The Speidel expansion band shows surface grime between links and wear to the polished finish (photo 4).
