Elgin National Watch Co. 17 Jewel Size 12 Open Face Pocket Watch with Chain - A vintage American open-face pocket watch featuring a gold-filled case and matching silver-tone chain. The gold-tone metal dial is designed with a sunburst-textured center and a concentric brushed outer track, featuring stylized black Arabic numerals and a subsidiary seconds dial at the 6 o'clock position. The dial is printed with the word ELGIN. The manual wind movement is engraved with ELGIN NATL WATCH CO., U.S.A., 17 JEWELS, and the serial number 26223432. The regulator scale is marked with S and F. The interior of the hinged case back is stamped with the Wadsworth brand name in a script cartouche, followed by WARRANTED / 25 YRS. / 65081 / 51. Several hand-scratched watchmaker service marks are visible on the inner case. The exterior case back features a pinstripe engine-turned pattern with a vacant central cartouche. The watch is accompanied by a curb link chain with a large spring ring clasp and a swivel fob attachment. This watch runs. The watch case measures approximately 1.75 inches (44.5 mm) in diameter. The chain measures approximately 10 inches in length. The watch is in good vintage condition. The dial shows age-related spotting and minor oxidation throughout (photos 1, 2). The gold-filled case displays light surface scratches and visible brassing on the bow and crown (photo 3). The crystal remains clear with minor surface scuffing (photo 2). The movement appears clean (photo 5). Timekeeping accuracy has not been tested.
