Goodwin, Philo A. Biography of Andrew Jackson. R. Hart Towner, 1835. First Edition. - A first edition biography of Andrew Jackson by Philo A. Goodwin, Esq., published in New York by R. Hart Towner in 1835. This antique volume is bound in full brown leather featuring gilt-stamped decorative borders on the front and rear boards. The spine is detailed with gilt horizontal bands and floral motifs, and retains a portion of the original gilt-lettered title. The interior opens to a frontispiece steel-engraved portrait of Jackson, with the printed credit Engraved on Steel by A. Willard below the image and the caption ANDREW JACKSON PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. The title page includes the full title and publication details, bearing a contemporary handwritten ink ownership inscription at the top reading Thomas Purdue. The text concludes on page 456 with the printed word FINIS. The work provides a contemporary account of Jackson's life and presidency, including details of his military career as a Major General and correspondence with historical figures such as Martin Van Buren. This antique volume shows significant signs of age and wear consistent with its 1835 publication date. The leather binding is heavily scuffed with significant loss to the leather at the corners and along the spine (photos 1, 2, and 3). The spine exhibits vertical cracking and partial loss of the decorative surface (photo 3). Internally, the pages show heavy foxing and brown spotting throughout (photos 4-13). There are visible water stains, most prominent at the inner margins and page edges (photos 4, 12, and 13). Page 410 has a large irregular horizontal tear extending across the text block (photo 10). The frontispiece and title page show wear at the edges with some minor chipping and folding (photos 4 and 5). The binding is tender with visible cracking to the inner hinges (photo 12).
