1887. Mosby, John S. Mosby's War Reminiscences. Dodd, Mead & Company. First Edition. - This hardcover volume is the first edition of Mosby's War Reminiscences by John S. Mosby, published in 1887 by Dodd, Mead & Company. The work serves as a personal historical memoir of Confederate partisan ranger operations during the American Civil War, specifically detailing the activities of Mosby's Rangers. The book is an octavo-sized volume bound in the publisher's original red cloth. The front cover features a decorative gilt double-line border and the title and author's name stamped in gold-toned lettering. The spine is similarly decorated in gilt with the title, author's surname, and a stylized trident or spear motif centered above the publisher's name at the foot. The interior comprises approximately 264 pages of text, printed on off-white paper with standard typography of the late 19th century. The text includes various quoted correspondences and military orders, including letters from R. E. Lee and General Stuart. The volume is constructed with sewn binding typical of the period. The book is in fair to good condition, showing signs of significant age and use. The red cloth binding exhibits shelf wear at the corners and fraying at the head and tail of the spine (photo 3). There is noticeable fading and light staining to the front and rear boards (photos 1 and 2). The most significant condition defect is heavy pencil scribbling and abstract drawings located on the front and rear endpapers, which obscure the original blank pages (photos 14 and 15). The internal text block remains intact with light toning and occasional small foxing spots throughout the pages (photos 4-13). A minor tear is visible at the inner hinge where the endpaper meets the binding (photo 14).
