1395-1700 A Collection of Dutch and Germanic Heraldic Wax Seal Impressions - A collection of sigillography specimens featuring wax and paper-wafer seal impressions mounted on individual cardstock mounts. The collection focuses on ecclesiastical, municipal, and noble heraldry from the Low Countries and Germany, with primary geographic representation from Maastricht, Brabant, Egmond, Goes, Echte, and Saxony. The impressions are rendered in red wax, green wax, and a white paper wafer, showcasing various heraldic motifs including saints, coats of arms, and municipal seals. Each card includes detailed handwritten archival notations in Dutch and Latin that identify the provenance of the original seal dies. A red oval seal is mounted to a card with handwritten notes identifying it as the seal of ”Johannes Weent,” Abbot of the ”Egmond Abdy” (Egmond Abbey), dating to ”1395.” A large circular red seal is identified by handwritten notes as the ”Zegel v. d. Tweeheeregheid van Maastricht” from ”1442,” bearing a Latin legend transcribed on the mount as ”s. coetocius. opide. traiectensis.” An octagonal white paper-wafer seal is mounted to cardstock labeled ”Staten van Brabant” and dated ”1700,” with a printed or embossed legend containing ”BRABANTIAE” and ”CONCILII” surrounding a crowned lion rampant. A circular green wax seal is mounted to a card labeled ”Muiderberg” and dated to the ”17e E” (17th Century), with a legend reading ”SIGILLVM-MUIDERBERGENSE.” One card features a trio of red wax seals for the city of ”Goes,” dated ”1527,” including a seal for the ”CIVITATIS GOESANE.” Another card displays a circular red seal for ”Echte of Egthe,” identified as the ”Sigillum scabinorum de Echte.” Two cards are dedicated to ”Saxen” (Saxony); one holds four small octagonal red wax seals with various coats of arms, and the other features a large circular red seal with a complex heraldic shield and a legend starting with ”KORNIGL. S...”. The card bears the name ”ADELSCOLL. H - VAN - DAM” in stamped blue ink. One fragmented dark seal specimen is mounted to a card labeled ”Coenraets Albert” and ”Col; Scholten . v . Aschat.” A large circular red wax seal on a plain white mount bears the handwritten number ”202” and a legend beginning with ”COMMVNIT...”. The largest card mounts measure approximately 4 inches square. Individual wax seals range from approximately 1 inch to 3 inches in diameter. The collection is in generally good condition, though age-related wear is visible across several specimens. The large red seal labeled ”202” shows significant surface cracking and fragmentation (photo 2). The Egmond Abbey seal has a small chip at the bottom edge (photo 3). Fine surface crazing and spiderweb cracking are visible on the Echte seal (photo 10) and the Saxony shield seal (photo 8). The Coenraets Albert specimen is heavily fragmented with significant losses to the material (photo 7). The cardstock mounts show mild toning, corner wear, and occasional foxing consistent with archival storage. The white mount for seal ”202” has a torn lower-left corner (photo 2).
