Sperry, Armstrong. A Group of Four Nautical Adventure Books. 1939-1959. (DJ) - A group of four hardcover volumes written and illustrated by the Newbery Medal-winning author Armstrong Sperry, focused on maritime adventure and historical fiction. The collection includes: Lost Lagoon: A Pacific Adventure (1939), Storm Canvas (1944), Hull-Down for Action (1945/1946), and Black Falcon (1949/1959). Each volume is bound in publisher's original cloth with stamped or embossed decorations and includes the original illustrated dust jackets, now housed in protective mylar covers. Storm Canvas is a Guild Book edition bound in green cloth with a ship motif embossed on the upper board. The copyright page states Copyright, 1944 by Armstrong Sperry. Lost Lagoon is a Doubleday, Doran & Co. edition with a copyright date of 1939. Hull-Down for Action was published by Doubleday & Company, Inc., Garden City, New York, 1946, with a 1945 copyright date; it is bound in blue cloth with black illustrated motifs. Black Falcon is a John C. Winston Co. edition, stated as a seventh printing from June 1959 on the copyright page, bound in red cloth with black stamped titles and a pirate motif. All volumes are octavo (8vo) in size and feature numerous internal illustrations, including full-page plates and chapter header vignettes by the author. The collection exhibits visible wear consistent with age and use. Dust jackets show significant chipping and open tears, particularly at the spine ends and corners of Lost Lagoon (photo 2) and Black Falcon (photo 22). Tape residue and repairs are visible on the dust jacket of Lost Lagoon (photo 2). The cloth bindings show moderate shelf wear with bumped corners and light rubbing to the extremities. Internal pages show general age-toning throughout, and some volumes exhibit a slight spine lean. The mylar protectors show minor surface scuffing. No ownership marks or inscriptions are visible in the provided photographs.
