1937-1967. Three Volumes Illustrated by Robert Lawson. Various Publishers. (DJ) - A collection of three hardcover volumes featuring the work of Newbery and Caldecott-winning illustrator Robert Lawson. The first volume is Country Colic by Robert Lawson, published by Little, Brown and Company, Boston, in 1944. This work, described as a glossary for the inexperienced regarding rustic residence, is bound in tan publisher’s cloth with a green stamped title and a central vignette of an apple on the front board. The interior features green pictorial endpapers and numerous black-and-white line illustrations throughout. The second volume is Adam of the Road by Elizabeth Janet Gray, illustrated by Robert Lawson, published by The Viking Press. This is a thirteenth printing from February 1967. The book is bound in turquoise cloth with a dark blue stamped silhouette of a minstrel on the front board. The third volume is From the Horn of the Moon by Arthur Mason, illustrated by Robert Lawson, published by Garden City Publishing Co., Inc. in 1937 (copyright 1930). It is bound in blue cloth with dark blue stamped lettering and a moon-fishing vignette on the spine. The front endpaper of this volume bears a handwritten ownership name in blue ink reading J.C. Adams and a pencil notation reading 10.00 sp. A small white adhesive label residue is visible on the lower spine. The collection shows signs of age-appropriate wear. Country Colic retains its original pictorial dust jacket, now housed in a protective mylar cover; the jacket shows minor chipping at the head and tail of the spine and light edge wear (photo 1). The tan cloth binding is clean with sharp corners. Adam of the Road includes a pictorial dust jacket showing visible creasing, edge wear, and a small tear at the top of the front panel (photo 13). The turquoise cloth binding remains bright. From the Horn of the Moon lacks a dust jacket and shows shelf wear to the spine ends and corners (photo 23). There is an ownership signature on the front endpaper (photo 24) and minor toning to the pages. The interior pages of all three volumes appear generally clean with occasional light foxing or thumbing consistent with use.
