1939-1966 A Trio of Robert Lawson Illustrated Hardcover Books in Protective Mylar Dust Jacket Covers - A collection of three vintage hardcover books featuring the work of award-winning American author and illustrator Robert Lawson. The lot includes a copy of Watchwords of Liberty: A Pageant of American Quotations, published by Little, Brown and Company, Boston and Toronto. This volume is a 1957 new edition, sixth printing, bound in tan cloth with a blue stamped vignette of a torch and arrows on the front board. It contains numerous black and white line illustrations depicting scenes from American history. The second volume is an abridged edition of John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress, published by Frederick A. Stokes Company, New York, in 1939. This work is bound in red cloth with a gilt-stamped title and a vignette of a traveler on the front board. The third volume is They Were Strong and Good, published by The Viking Press, New York, dated as a fourteenth printing from April 1966. This title is bound in red cloth and features the Caldecott Medal seal on the front of the dust jacket. Each book is accompanied by its original pictorial dust jacket, all of which are housed in clear protective mylar covers. The title page of Watchwords of Liberty features a blue ink stamp reading EMERSON SCHOOL LIBRARY 1116 W. ALICE SPOKANE 18, WASH. and a handwritten ink call number 973 LA. The copyright page of this volume states COPYRIGHT 1943, 1957, BY ROBERT LAWSON and New Edition published August 1957, Sixth Printing. The title page of Pilgrim's Progress includes the printed text PUBLISHED BY FREDERICK A. STOKES COMPANY NEW YORK 1939 with a copyright page reading Copyright for Illustrations and Foreword, 1939, by FREDERICK A. STOKES COMPANY INCORPORATED. The title page for They Were Strong and Good identifies the publisher as VIKING and the copyright page indicates FOURTEENTH PRINTING APRIL 1966. The collection is in generally good vintage condition. Watchwords of Liberty is an ex-library copy, exhibiting a white adhesive call number label 973 La on the lower spine of the dust jacket (photo 4), a handwritten ink call number on the front board (photo 5), and a library stamp and ink notation on the title page (photo 6). The dust jacket for this volume shows minor edge wear and light surface scuffing. Pilgrim's Progress shows light toning to the dust jacket edges and minor shelf wear (photo 11). The red cloth binding has slight sunning to the top and bottom edges (photo 14). They Were Strong and Good has a vertical strip of clear adhesive tape applied to the rear of the dust jacket (photo 20) and minor shelf wear to the jacket edges. Across all three volumes, internal pages appear clean and free of significant foxing or tearing. All dust jackets are preserved under clear mylar covers.
