19th Century Double Sided Red Sealing Wax Impression Supreme Council - A detached double-sided historical cast of a state seal, composed of red sealing wax or shellac and mounted to a heavy paper tag. The obverse features a central figure, likely a monarch, seated on a throne under a Gothic-style architectural canopy, flanked by two smaller standing figures. The reverse features a heraldic lion rampant centered within a circular border. An impressed Latin inscription in uppercase characters follows the border of the reverse. Readable portions of the circumscription include VM, SUPREMI, CONCILII, AND, and COM. The seal is attached to a vertically oriented, light-colored paper tag that is folded over at the top. The impression is cast in high relief with irregular edges characteristic of poured wax. The wax seal measures approximately 2 3/4 inches across the widest point. The paper tag extends approximately 3 1/2 inches above the seal. The wax impression shows surface dirt and minor abrasions to the raised details on both sides (photos 2 and 4). A small diagonal fissure or crack is visible on the obverse near the bottom left edge (photo 4). The paper tag shows significant toning, heavy creasing from previous folding, and scattered light foxing (photo 1). No other visible faults are present.
