Burroughs, Edgar Rice. Tarzan the Untamed. Grosset & Dunlap, Late 1920s. (DJ) - A hardbound edition of Tarzan the Untamed by Edgar Rice Burroughs, published by Grosset & Dunlap, New York. This volume is bound in red cloth with black stamped lettering and a circular design on the front board and spine. The title page identifies the work as being illustrated by J. Allen St. John and includes a central decorative vignette. The interior contains several black and white plates, including a frontispiece and internal illustrations titled The fight with Ska and A fierce cut drove through the fellow’s collar bone. The book is accompanied by its original pictorial dust jacket, which is housed in a mylar protective cover. The dust jacket reverse features a printed advertisement for Edgar Rice Burroughs novels, listing titles up to Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle (1928), and a listing of Grosset & Dunlap popular fiction authors and titles. The foot of the title page bears a printed statement reading Made in the United States of America. The original pictorial dust jacket shows significant wear, including large chips and losses at the spine ends (photo 3), numerous small tears and creases along the top and bottom edges (photo 1), and a vertical crease running the length of the spine (photo 3). The red cloth binding remains relatively bright, with minor bumping and light wear to the corners and spine ends (photo 5). Internally, the pages exhibit light toning consistent with age, but appear free of significant foxing or marking (photo 8). There is a small area of discoloration or surface wear on the front board (photo 4). The mylar protective cover is intact and shows minor surface scuffing (photo 1).
