1901. Wyer, Henry S. Nantucket, Picturesque and Historic. Nantucket: H. S. Wyer. First Edition. - A first edition copy of Nantucket, Picturesque and Historic by Henry S. Wyer, published in Nantucket in 1901. This quarto-sized volume is bound in the publisher's original green cloth with an illustrative title rendered in white script on the front cover. The title page bears the full title, author's name, and the imprint Nantucket, 1901, H. S. Wyer. The copyright page confirms the date as 1901. The work is dedicated to the author's friend, Charles E. Kelley. The volume serves as a significant photographic record of the island at the turn of the century, containing numerous half-tone plates produced by the Suffolk Engraving Co. and printed by the Eastern Printing Co. of Boston. Featured illustrations include the Old Windmill (erected 1746), Sankoty Head, Moonlight at Brant Point, Broadway, 'Sconset South, and The Harbor from South Tower, alongside portraits and poems by Wyer. The text includes the poem The Life Savers and a portrait accompanying The Quaker. The book is in poor to fair condition. The front internal hinge is completely split, exposing the underlying webbing and stitching (photo 8). The front cover remains attached to the text block by only a few threads and is nearly detached. The green cloth binding shows significant fraying and loss at the corners and spine ends (photo 3). A small portion of the cloth is torn and lifting at the top edge of the rear board (photo 2). Internally, the pages exhibit scattered foxing, general toning, and thumb-soiling consistent with age and handling (photos 4, 11, and 12). Several pages appear to be loose or starting from the binding.
