20th Century American School, Framed Graphite Drawing of Where the Wild Things Are - American School, 20th Century. A graphite pencil drawing on wove paper depicting Max and a Wild Thing character derived from Maurice Sendak's children's book Where the Wild Things Are. The figure of Max is depicted seated wearing a crown and wolf suit while holding a scepter, facing the large horned and clawed creature. The work is unsigned and bears no visible inscriptions. It is presented in a layered card mat and housed under glass within a molded wood and composite frame with carved foliate and reeded motifs, finished in gilt with a red inner fillet. The reverse is enclosed with a plain white backing board secured by metal framer's points. Measurements derived from the included folding ruler: Frame: approximately 13 inches wide by 9 1/2 inches high Visible image aperture: approximately 7 1/2 inches wide by 5 inches high. The paper exhibits faint surface smudging and light interior toning throughout the visible aperture (photos 2 and 3). Minor handling marks and surface soil are present on the mat board (photos 1, 2, and 4). The frame exhibits light surface wear, dust accumulation in the crevices of the molding, and minor abrasions along the gilt exterior edges (photos 1, 4, and 5).
